Tree Trimming and Pruning in Spring, TX

Routine work: clearance over the roof and driveway, dead limbs out of the crown, weight off long limbs before the next storm season.

Why people call for it

  • Branches resting on the roof or filling the gutters.
  • Limbs over the driveway low enough to scrape a truck.
  • Dead wood in the crown of an otherwise healthy oak.
  • A long limb reaching toward the house that moves a lot in the wind.
  • An HOA letter about sidewalk or street clearance.

Each of these can be planned. None needs to wait for a storm to make it urgent.

What good pruning looks like

Cuts made just outside the collar where a branch meets the trunk, not flush against it and not leaving a stub. A crown thinned evenly rather than stripped along the inside. Dead and crossing limbs out first. Ask the company to walk you through which limbs will come off before the saw starts.

What trimming is not

It is not line clearance. Work near the utility’s lines is for the utility or a crew qualified for it. It is also not a fix for a tree that is dying; pruning a beetle-killed pine only postpones the removal.

  1. How much should come off?

Less than most people expect. Taking too much of a crown at once stresses a tree. A good crew explains what it is removing and why.

  2. Is topping a tree a good idea?

Cutting the top off a tree to shorten it is widely discouraged by arborists. If a tree is too tall for where it stands, ask about removal instead.

  3. Can a crew trim branches over the line to my house?

Only if it says how it will handle the line. CenterPoint Energy tells customers never to trim trees around energized lines, and to contact it with concerns.
