Storm Damage Tree Cleanup in Spring, TX

A limb on the roof, a trunk across the fence, a broken top hanging in the crown. This is the one tier where the first call may not be to a tree crew at all.

Before anything else: If any part of the tree is on or touching a wire, the first call is CenterPoint Energy, and 911 if anyone is in danger. The utility tells customers to stay at least 35 feet from a downed line and never to trim around energized lines.

Keep people out of the rooms under a limb on the roof, and keep children and pets away from anything on the ground.

What storm damage looks like on a Spring lot

Most Spring streets have trees taller than the houses, so a single storm produces the same handful of calls: a limb through the roof edge, a trunk laid across a fence or a car, a pine snapped at mid-height, and hangers, which are broken limbs caught in the crown that can come down on a calm day. Hangers are the easiest to miss and the most likely to fall on someone who thinks the storm is over.

During Hurricane Beryl on July 8, 2024, Spring recorded wind up to 58 mph and 7.2 inches of rain. The Spring Fire Department had answered 300 calls by July 9, including downed trees, power lines and gas leaks. Community Impact named Northampton among the neighborhoods hit.

The Order of Calls

  1. 1

911, if anyone is hurt or in danger

Including a line down near people, a fire, or a gas smell.

  2. 2

CenterPoint Energy, if a wire is involved

A line on the ground, in the tree, or pulled off the house.

  3. 3

    A tree crew

Once no line is involved, or the utility has made it safe.

  4. 4

    Photos, before and after

For your own records and anyone else who needs them.

  5. 5

    A roofer or fence company

After the tree is off the structure.

  6. 6

    A second look later

For trees that stood but took the wind, weeks after.

What the crew does, and does not

A storm crew takes the weight off the structure first, then cuts the tree into pieces that can be carried or chipped, then clears the yard to the extent the quote says. It does not repair the roof, re-hang gutters or rebuild the fence, and it does not handle the utility’s line.

After a big storm, every tree company in north Harris County is busy at once. Ask for an estimated time, and ask whether the price changes for an after-hours or next-day call.

Questions people ask after a storm

  1. Should I pull the limb off the roof myself?

No. A limb on a roof is often under tension or still attached higher up, and it can shift when weight comes off. Leave it for a crew.

  2. Who fixes the roof?

A roofer, after the tree crew has the limb off. Ask the tree company to tarp or not tarp; some do, some do not.

  3. The tree is in my neighbor’s yard but fell on my side. Who calls?

Either of you can call for the removal. Who pays is between the two of you and not something this site can answer.

A Tree Is Down?

If a wire is involved, call the utility first. If not, call now and say what the tree is on.
